Abstract
On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency: sars-Cov-2 was spreading rapidly and death tolls were rising. Relying on what little was known about how COVID-19 was spread, national and sub-national government bodies acted quickly to try to stop transmission. In many countries, this resulted in stay-at-home orders, school shutdowns, hospitals ceasing operations outside of emergency services, business closures, and restrictions on routine social gatherings. These actions, along with widespread sickness and death, made it clear that the social, political, and economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic would fundamentally reshape our world.
