Abstract
On December 6, 1990, Haiti elected a new president: Reverend Jean-Bertrand Aristide. His election unseated Jean-Claude Duvalier, who came to power in 1971. Jean-Claude and his father, who had presided over Haiti before him, were known for their violent rule. Less than one year after Aristide’s election, a military coup resulted in Duvalier stepping back into power. Haitians fled the political upheaval. Many boarded boats to the United States.
