Abstract
Shugerman discusses South Carolina's stunning reversal of slave trading bans in 1803. He argues that the Louisiana Purchase fueled the reversal of the ban and suggests that the state's politicians sacrificed their immediate financial and electoral interests for more distant sectional benefits.
