Abstract
Furthering the central message of this book – that humans are distinct in their ability to work within a world of symbolic spaces and abstract meanings – this chapter presents a study of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. This research aims to answer a central question: how can a deeper understanding of symbols help us to reconsider the fundamental health concepts of “stigma” and “coping”? In addressing this question, this study hopes to promote a renewed understanding of illness and rejuvenate modern approaches to health-related human rights.
