Abstract
Milton Regan has written an unusual book. This is as close as one can thoughtfully come to a literally roman- tic legal analysis. He has written a defense of substantive marriage law that has as its purpose encouraging self-sacrifice, intimacy and trust between spouses. Only in such an environment can spouses transform their individual identities to incorporate each other, making the marriage greater than the sum of its two-party parts. Says Regan, shared happiness, pain, closeness, and caring are at the forefront of marital values, and therefore an important function of law should be to express these values.
