Abstract

A new volume of law reports of cases decided in England from 1625 to 1627 in the court of King's Bench has just been published. It is a surprise to those beginning the study of legal history that there were not always complete, official reports, published soon after decision, of judgments in the central courts of common law. It is a surprise that lawyers and judges had not always shared a common body of uniformly paginated cases on which to build their arguments and opinions. But law reporting and reliance on precedent developed slowly and gradually in England.
