Abstract
The central claim of this intriguing book is less morally imperative than those arguments but, at the theoretical level at least, no less challenging. It is that the same basic cruel facts of life generate a dilemma: if we are to have a coherent moral view, we must revise some fundamental assumptions that we make about morality. The author's aim is not to show how this problem can be solved, but to persuade us it is real and not easily avoided.
