Abstract
This valuable book offers an insightful analysis and appraisal of the idea that citizens have a general duty to obey the law. The author has been a conscientious objector to his government's policies towards Palestinians. Despite that political position, he resists the "philosophical anarchism" that is now widely shared by theorists. He weaves together complex threads of argument and defends "a carefully qualified duty" to obey. His reasoning is subtle, evenhanded, and enlightening, The upshot is a quite limited duty to obey, one that should be agreeable to most political philosophers.
