Abstract
The metaphor of physician as captain of the ship seems to assume a single or unified function. Most of the papers in this volume present evidence to the contrary, setting forth a panoply of functions, many of them irreconcilable, the primacy of which depends on the perspective of the observer. Indeed, physicians may serve as scientific investigators, diagnosticians, patient advisors, skilled technicians, team supervisors, palliative caregivers, consultants to legislators and policy makers, rationing agents, administrators, and more. This is no surprise.
